Description

The key to the next generation of effective educational technology in support of further language learning lies in the quality of automated feedback and guided instruction that can be provided to learners and their teachers online. To date, most automated assessment and feedback has been based on multiple choice questions. The summer school aims to teach participants the core principles and methods from the fields of machine learning, natural language processing, and psychometrics which underpin summative assessment of free text answers to prompts, formative feedback on writing quality, and psychometric profiling to support personalized adaptive learning.

The summer school would suit participants who want to better understand the technology behind and capabilities of products such as Cambridge English Write and Improve, and the Oxford Vocabulary Trainer App, and/or who would like to integrate these capabilities into language teaching syllabuses or courseware.

We will be limiting attendee numbers to a maximum of 35 to ensure that they can interact with each other and us in a relaxed environment. In the first instance, potential participants should email alta.summer.school [at] gmail.com and explain why in not more than 300 words they would like to attend and what relevant qualifications and experience they have. Accepted participants will be sent a confirmation email, together with registration and accommodation details.
