Using specimens from the University Museum of Zoology and the Garden’s collections, you will be introduced to the fascinating, beautiful and sometimes bizarre world of insects. Although European examples will be included, the emphasis will be on the exotic; from Giant Atlas Moths to brightly-coloured metallic beetles. Teaching will include a variety of observational and drawing techniques, using pencil, pen and watercolour. Emphasis will be on individual tuition and artists of all ability are welcome. The course will include a brief talk about the insect collection by Ed Turner, Curator of Insects at the Museum of Zoology.

This three-day course led by botanical artist Georita Harriott, will begin with a visit to the Fitzwilliam Museum to view a selection of beautiful watercolours painted by some of the great European illustrators depicting flower posies with butterflies and insects.

Once back at the Garden, Georita will demonstrate the first stage in drawing and designing a posy of small summer flowers gathered from the Garden, along with butterfly specimens from her own collection.

All stages in the production of an illustration including observational drawing of insects and plants, colour-mixing and watercolour techniques will be demonstrated during the course. In addition to whole class tuition, participants will receive individual tuition according to their needs. Beginners and those with more experience are all welcome.

The aim of this three-day watercolour course is to create a beautiful portrait of these late summer blooms. Reinhild will help you choose and arrange the stems on the page, creating a colourful and exciting composition. On this two-day course led by artist Petula Stone, students will begin by choosing from the colourful collection of Autumn treasures found in the Garden and then concentrate on arranging a good composition for their painting. Petula will demonstrate a variety of watercolour techniques to the group, including how to achieve a smooth wash of colour, wet into wet washes, glazing washes of colour to achieve deep tones and negative painting.

She will be on hand throughout to offer you individual help with your work. The course is suitable for and welcomes painters of all levels.

This two-day beginners course led by Natural History illustrator Lizzie Harper, will use autumn leaves, berries and fruits as subjects as you learn to draw and paint some of the glories of the Botanic Garden in Autumn. The course will build on the Learn to Draw from Nature: Spring course but can be taken even if you werent able to attend the March course.

On day one you will focus on autumn leaves tackling some detailed pencil drawings which show the lights and darks as well as the shape of the leaf and its veins. After lunch you will begin to work with watercolours, covering the basics of how to use and mix the paints, before having a go at painting some of the amazing reds, golds, and oranges of autumn leaves found in the Garden.

On day two you will move on to drawing berries and fruit, working on detailed pencil drawings in the morning and again looking for shadows and highlights on your chosen plants. The afternoon will be spent working with watercolours, trying to catch some of the shiny texture and deep rich colours of autumnal fruits.

By the end of this course you should feel confident enough to find a plant and have a go at drawing or painting it from life.

The Botanic Garden holds a large and important collection of cone bearing trees, giving us an amazing selection to choose from as subjects. This three-day course led by RHS Gold medal winning illustrator Reinhild Raistrick, will focus on these trees, including the Cedar of Lebanon, the Giant Redwood, the Scots Pine, the Douglas Fir, the Stone Pine and the Norway Spruce.

You will spend time observing the structure and pattern of each cone to help you develop a detailed and accurate drawing, before going on to paint the subject. Reinhild will help you improve your watercolour techniques through a combination of group demonstrations, but particularly through individual help. There will also be the opportunity to spend time out in the Garden observing and sketching the tree of the chosen cone.

Participants may wish to show part of the branch or even a scaled-down drawing of the whole tree in their illustration and Reinhild with give tips and advice on how best to achieve this. The course is suitable for artists of all levels.

Using autumn finds such as berries and curled leaves as a subject, you will explore the techniques required to produce glowing and exquisitely detailed painting on vellum. Vellum is a traditional surface made from calfskin, and has been used to produce vibrant illuminations for hundreds of years.

This isn’t a course for beginners - you don’t need to have painted on vellum before, but you do need to have watercolour experience. It is led by award winning artist Gael Sellwood. during the two days Gael will demonstrate techniques, provide you with handouts and give you individual tuition so that you can practise techniques or work on a composition. This course will guide you through how to record a plant botanically on paper so that the observer finds out how the plant grows. You will look at examples of botanical illustrations, both historical and contemporary. Composition on the page is also important. Accurate drawing and measuring in pencil, simple dissections and composition on the final page will all be looked at. Initial work will be done in pencil and then transferred onto watercolour paper to either be worked up in pen and ink or in watercolour. Instruction will be given in both methods.

Note: The Botanic Garden closes at 4pm in November so participants will not have access to the Garden when this course finishes.
