This two-day linocut printing workshop led by local printmaker Emma James will explore the pattern and shape possibilities that this versatile medium allow. You will learn how to create bold expressive linocut prints taking inspiration from Indian print patterns, and print onto a variety of materials including beautiful handmade papers and fabric.

Looking at Indian pattern print examples Emma will begin by looking at how to draw, adapt and transfer images for a linocut. She will explain how to use different tools to explore a variety of mark making techniques, how to register your lino block to create accurate layered images and apply the inks with rollers. Prints will then be made using a press, as well as by hand-burnishing.

The course is suitable for both beginners and more experienced print makers with Emma advising on and demonstrating a range of techniques such as overprinting, masking and creating multi-layer prints to suit different levels of experience.

Vanessa Stone is a cut paper artist who makes clean-lined, detail-layered collages by cutting into a single piece of paper and “drawing” with a scalpel. During this one-day workshop she will introduce you to the main techniques of paper cutting using craft knives and fine quality drawing papers. You will begin by making small practice samples and then create a beautiful larger finished piece of your own design, drawing inspiration form the beautiful plants in the Botanic Garden’s collection. Vanessa will be on hand to give one-to-one guidance throughout the day and teach you the central skills of making compositions from plants and natural forms that will be developed into collage.

Inder Bull of Inder’s Kitchen will introduce two dry spice blends which you will learn how to grind in a pestle and mortar and take home to try. She will then demonstrate how to use fresh herbs to make two simple chutneys that can easily be made at home in a blender. During the morning Flis Plent, our Head of Education will also introduce the plants that produce all these wonderful flavours and give you tips on how to grow some of them yourself at home.

Join designer and printmaker Pia stlund for a two-day workshop to explore this captivating technique. Day One will begin with an illustrated talk on the history of nature printing, followed by a demonstration and printing session where you will learn how to take your own impressions using fresh plants and oil-based inks on paper. Day Two gives participants the chance to further develop technique and ideas and make their own nature printed project, whether a series of patterns, a set of cards or creating a record of their own garden.

The course is suitable for all levels including complete beginners.
