DescriptionThe conference Yangshao in the Past and Present showcases research on the Yangshao Culture from the disciplines of archaeology and cultural heritage, presented by speakers from the UK, China, Europe, and the USA. The Yangshao ‘Culture’, a remarkable middle Neolithic cultural complex in the Yellow River Valley lasting from 7000 to 4500 BP, provides a wealth of insightful details about the developments of Neolithic ways of life, including different pathways towards cultural and social complexity. With the many presentations from specialists researching different dimensions of the Yangshao, we hope the conference will generate not just interest but also retrospection and discussions. The conference will be presented in English and Chinese, and will be fully accessible in both languages. The Yangshao ‘Culture’, a remarkable middle Neolithic cultural complex in the Yellow River Valley lasting from 7000 to 4500 BP, provides a wealth of insightful details about the developments of Neolithic ways of life, including different pathways towards cultural and social complexity. The distinct subsistence basis, the spatial organisation of settlements, development of painted pottery, and the hints at belief systems are but some of the characteristics we can point to. To enable further reflection on this important Neolithic cultural complex, the conference will focus on the richness of data and the expansion in knowledge over recent decades due to the extensive programs of excavations, research, museum building, and Archaeological Parks. We hope to bring both the importance of the archaeology to wider attention as well as the measures taken in China to research and protect the sites and engage the public. With the many presentations from specialists researching different dimensions of the Yangshao we hope the conference will generate not just interest but also retrospection and discussions about what was distinct to the Yangshao and what may indicate processes familiar from other regions.
