As the global energy landscape shifts, the decarbonisation of road freight is entering a critical second phase, one shaped as much by geopolitics as by technology. Ongoing political uncertainty and military conflicts continue to disrupt oil markets, driving price volatility and exposing the vulnerability of fossil fuel–dependent logistics systems.
In contrast, economies that have advanced further in their transitions to sustainable energy systems are demonstrating greater resilience, supported by more stable and predictable energy costs. This growing divergence is accelerating the shift toward electrification and smart energy integration across freight networks.
At the same time, technological advances in heavy duty electric trucks design, rapid charging infrastructure and digital logistics platforms are expanding the solution space. However, electrification at scale depends not only on physical assets and infrastructure, but on access to high-quality, shareable data across the logistics ecosystem. Improved data visibility—across routes, loads, energy demand, and asset utilisation—is becoming essential to optimise charging strategies, reduce inefficiencies, and enable coordinated operations.
Beyond enabling electrification, greater access to logistics data opens up wider opportunities to design more efficient, adaptive, and resilient transport systems. Data-driven collaboration allows stakeholders to better anticipate disruptions, optimise network performance, and unlock new operational models that were previously out of reach.
As a result of the above trends, logistics is now being reframed: not merely as a sector facing decarbonisation challenges, but as a strategic lever for enhancing national resilience, energy security, and economic stability. Examples of this reframing include:
