Turbomachinery Course

Cambridge Turbomachinery Course, July 2024

Cambridge Turbomachinery Course, July 2024

Description

Turbomachinery is essential to run the world we live in today and is part of our race to decarbonise the propulsion and power sectors of the future. Understanding thermofluids in the design of jet engines, industrial gas turbines, steam turbines, turbochargers, pumps, compressors, fans and many other less conventional types of rotating machinery is key.

This course will teach fundamental principals of the subject at a level beyond that covered in most undergraduate courses, whilst maintaining more generality than is usually available from courses and conferences on research topics. The emphasis will be on providing a sound understanding of the physical principles governing thermofluid behaviours, how these principles can be applied to different types of machines, and the methods we use in design and analysis.

All types of turbomachinery will be covered, with separate lectures on axial compressors, axial turbines, radial machines, heat transfer, experimental methods, numerical methods, unsteady flow, propulsion integration, aircraft design, future fuels and environmental impacts.
