The Language Centre was established as an academic service in 1990. The Centre supports the teaching and learning of languages throughout the University. It does so flexibly in accordance with the needs of its users; it uses IT to underpin its operations and its activities are informed by relevant research in second language acquisition and educational technology.

The ADTIS In-Sessional Programme provides support during the academic year and is designed to cater to the academic English needs of postgraduates, postdocs and undergraduates at the University.

The Online In-Sessional Programme provides support during the academic year and is tailored to needs of the individual student. This support is designed to cater to the academic English needs of students on ICE MSt programmes at the University and lasts for one calendar year irrespective of the entry term.

The Academic Training & Development for International Students (ADTIS) Pre-Sessional Course provides a range of support for incoming international postgraduate students to prepare them for the many challenges they will face in their degree course here at Cambridge. Running over five weeks- the course structure mirrors that of the University of Cambridge in its combination of lectures, seminars, workshops and individual supervisions.

Anyone who is not a member of staff or student of the University can access the wide range of resources at the John Trim Centre (JTC), part of the University of Cambridge Language Centre, by registering and paying an annual or termly fee, depending on their needs.
Resources are available in over 180 languages from beginners' to advanced level and JTC staff are available to help and guide users in their choice of materials. Your annual membership fee includes an initial advice session with one of our trained advisers who will introduce you to our multimedia workstations, video viewing stations and listening stations all of which can be used individually or in pairs for independent learning. Direct satellite broadcasts are currently available daily in many languages, and live TV from many countries can be watched on the workstations.
