Description

The Early Transmission History of Geoffrey of Monmouth in its Multilingual Contexts: A Symposium

Geoffrey of Monmouth’s History of the Kings of Britain (or De gestis Britonum) was a hugely popular work during the Middle Ages: it survives in well over 200 manuscripts, and was translated into many vernacular languages, including French, English, Welsh and Norse within about a century of completion. The aim of this one-day symposium is to bring together some of the latest research on the manuscripts of the History, its early transmission, and the relationships between the Latin manuscripts and the early vernacular translations. This is timely moment to take stock of this important subject: a major monograph will shortly be published on the Latin manuscripts; a project is underway to create the first editions of the earliest Welsh translations; and the ‘Geoffrey of Monmouth microfilm collection’ has been freshly re-catalogued.

Registration fee includes lunch and refreshments.
